Biography



Richard Felton began his academic career with the Graphic Design Department of The University of the Arts in 1974. As a full time Special Lecturer he worked extensively with developing a highly disciplined and rigorous sophomore design program, and teaching the junior level 3D Design, and Typography classes. Along with teaching duties, he served as assistant chairman in 1977-78, and joined with other facility members in a practicing design partnership. In 1978, he moved to New York to pursue a career in the profession. In 1985, Richard returned to teaching part time bringing his professional experience to the senior level program. Since 1999, he has been a full time Professor, teaching both sophomore and senior levels. For the past four years, he has been involved in introducing a new digital multi-media component to his teaching and to the department. His work in this area led to the concept and design of the Graphic Design Department web site; on line January 2001. He served as Chairperson of the Graphic Design Department from 2004 through 2008.

Richard is a noted designer of several successful and highly visible corporate identity programs. Upon joining
Anspach Grossman Portugal in 1978, he designed award-winning identities for Sun Oil Company, Contel, Price-Waterhouse, the New York Stock Exchange, Prange’s, Texaco, and others. In 1982 he was named an Associate of the firm. His work has appeared in leading design publications, and his identity for Sun was cited as one of the year’s ten best designs by Time Magazine.

Since establishing
Richard Felton Consultants in 1984, clientele seeking his advice and design expertise range from start-up businesses to established firms such as Tiffany & Co. Consulting with New York City’s most notable design firms, Richard has designed visual identity programs for International Trucks, through Anspach Grossman Portugal; and for Northwest Cargo and Burroughs Corporation, through Landor Associates and Siegel & Gale, respectively. Recent clients include Book of the Month Club, Star Alliance, Tyco, GTE, and WHX Corporation.

Richard holds a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Yale University and Bachelor of Science in Design from the University of Cincinnati. Richard grew up in Vermont and Ohio; he now lives and practices in New York City.
